About Blue Weimaraners

Blue Weimaraners are a subject of great controversy in Weimaraner circles, and anyone who wishes to purchase a Blue Weimaraner should know that the blue coat color is a disqualifying fault in the AKC/WCA breed standard. However, Blue Weimaraners were accepted in the standard until the early 1970's and thus remain AKC registerable dogs and are considered purebred Weimaraners.  They are eligible to compete in any dog event except for AKC conformation shows and WCA Ratings Tests (if intact).

We have documented the facts about the Blue Weimaraner, the controversy behind the coat color, the reasons for disqualification, et cetera, on the the Blue Weimaraner Website. We hope that the information on the site is not only fascinating history of the Weimaraner breed in the United States, but we also hope to clarify the persistent misunderstandings about Blue Weimaraners.

Blue Weimaraner Breeders

The quality of today's Blue Weimaraner has diminished considerably. After the 1972 disqualification, unscrupulous breeders bred for coat color alone and without concern for proving breeding stock claiming that Blues were rare. (Blues are not rare!) There are very few quality Blue Weimaraners being bred today. For this reason it is important to be extraordinarily selective when supporting the breeding practices of Blue breeders when purchasing a puppy from one. Quality must be demanded from the breeder. BLUE BREEDERS UNWILLING TO PROVE THEIR DOGS' BREED WORTHINESS ARE DOING WEIMARANERS AS A WHOLE, AND BLUE WEIMARANERS IN PARTICULAR, A DISSERVICE!

There are many breeders who make claims about their dogs without backing up their claims. Talk is cheap -- breeders should be confident enough about their breeding stock to be able to put them in competition against all Weimaraners, whether in field, obedience or agility as well as other tests, including health and temperament, which OBJECTIVELY measure quality. Only the best proven dogs should bred. Buyers should seek out breeders who care enough about Blue Weimaraners to test their breeding stock -- not only their working qualities, health and temperament, but also a conformation evaluation should be done if the breeder  is unfamiliar with correct breed type. Please do not fall for the multitude of breeder sites that merely claim "champion lines," "superior hunters," "show quality" etc., without proof!! Taking a dog through a few tests or competitions should be something a breeder willingly does and proves that they are serious about their breeding program. If the breeder says they "don't have time" to test, then how do they have time to evaluate their own dogs, whelp litters, start puppies for their puppy buyers? How serious are they about producing quality dogs if they are unwilling to prove their breeding stock?

DEMAND THAT A BLUE BREEDER LIVE UP TO WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A REPUTABLE GRAY BREEDER.  There is no excuse for anything less. The Blue Weimaraner is every bit a Weimaraner as the Grays, and SUBSTANDARD BREEDING IS A SLIGHT TO THE BLUE WEIMARANER! So, please, take every precaution to find a reputable breeder no matter what color the breeder prefers.

This site http://www.wonderpuppy.net/breeding.htm compiles some great links to help you identify a responsible breeder. Please, take the time to read even a portion of the articles on this site before you embark in the big commitment of bringing a new puppy into your life!
